João Nicolau de Almeida is recognized as a true pioneer in the Douro Valley. Thanks to his studies in oenology, his love of the terroir and his passion for his wine, he directed the research that helped to anchor the five main grape varieties of the Douro region in culture; Touriga Nacional, Touriga Francesa, Tinta Barroca, Tinta Roriz and Tinta Cao.
After more than 40 years at the helm of Ramos Pinto, João Nicolau de Almeida has passed the torch after his last harvest for the house in 2015. He is now continuing his study of the lands that enchant him, those of the Douro. Letting himself be guided by his thirst for learning more and more about nature, he works on a new wine melody with his children.
